About

About Word Sieve

Word Sieve finds words from the letters and clues you have: a rack of letters, a crossword pattern or board clues. The solvers run in your browser and search a public-domain word list of 172,781 entries, and each page describes how it orders its results.

How the solvers work

The solvers search an index built from the site's word list. When nothing matches, the page says so, in a message distinct from the ones for input the solver cannot read or an index file that failed to load. Check the result count too: when a list is too long to show in full, a message says how many matches are not displayed.

Nothing you type is sent to a server. Your rack, pattern and clues stay in your tab, and there is no account and no query log. A solve fetches only the site's own dictionary-index files, and those requests carry none of your letters. The site's security policy restricts the browser's connections to this site's origin, and the privacy page explains the data requests and hosting.

The index covers words of 2 to 15 letters, so the longest entries in the full list are outside the search range. The methodology page describes the dictionary's age and scope, the lookup and scan methods the solvers use, and the limits on each search.

What the dictionary can tell you

The list is Word Sieve's ENABLE1-derived edition: upstream ENABLE1 with 39 entries excluded before publication. The site has no tournament word list. A match means the word is in this edition and fits the constraints you entered. Whether it is legal in your game is for your game's own dictionary or rules to decide.

Who runs it

An independent developer builds and runs the site. Word Sieve shows no advertising, and no advertising script loads on any route. Some pages carry reserved ad spaces that are switched off. They sit in the written sections, outside the solver panel and away from the letter entry and results list. The privacy policy covers advertising and your data.

If a result looks wrong or a page's explanation does not match the tool, please get in touch with the page and the details. The terms of use cover use of the site.
