Terms of Use

Last updated: September 23, 2026

By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

The tools and their word list

Word Sieve provides free word solvers that run in your browser. They search an edition of ENABLE1, a public-domain English word list. The edition has 39 upstream entries excluded before publication and contains 172,781 entries. A result is a match in that edition, within the solver's search limits. The methodology page explains how the list is indexed, how the solvers search it and which limits apply.

Game-specific dictionaries

ENABLE1 is a general English word list and is not the official word list of any game. This site does not use, ship, or reproduce the proprietary tournament lists (TWL and NWL in North America, Collins elsewhere); its only word list is the ENABLE1 edition described above. A word found here may be refused by a game that judges against one of those lists, and a word your game accepts may be missing from this site's edition. This site is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any word game or its publisher; any game named on this site is named only to describe compatibility.

When not to rely on a result

Word Sieve is a general-purpose word utility for puzzles, games, crosswords, writing and curiosity. It is no authority on what is or is not a word, and it is not built for uses where a wrong answer carries consequences. Do not rely on it to settle a dispute, to validate a play in a competition governed by a specific lexicon, or as a source for any decision of substance. When the answer matters, consult the dictionary that governs your situation; if it disagrees with a result here, that dictionary is the one that counts.

No accounts

There is no sign-up, no login and no profile. Using a solver does not create an account, so there is nothing for us to suspend or close and nothing for you to cancel.

Saving a result

To keep a result, copy it before you leave the page. Word Sieve does not save your input or send it to a server: the solve uses the text field and page memory, and no rack, result, setting or preference is kept between page loads. There is no saved rack or history for us to restore, including through support. The privacy policy covers this and the separate caching of public page and dictionary files.

Provided as it is

The site and its tools are provided as they are and as available. To the fullest extent permitted by law, all implied terms and conditions of every kind are excluded, including any implied term as to satisfactory quality, merchantability, accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose, and no assurance is given that the site will be available, that any result will be right for your purpose, or that any page will behave identically on every browser or device. The pages themselves state what is claimed about the results: that they are the contents of a named word list. Nothing here should be read as an assurance beyond that.

Use it at your own risk

You are responsible for deciding whether a word this site returns is one you should use, and for checking it against whatever authority governs what you are doing.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the site operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising from use of the site, including any game lost, dispute mislaid or submission rejected on the strength of a result taken here. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Content, data and sources

The text, code and generated files on this site are the operator's own work, except the shipped word list. ENABLE1 was compiled by M. Leo Cooper and Alan Beale and released into the public domain by its authors. Word Sieve redistributes an ENABLE1-derived edition, the one described above, with a single trailing newline appended; the full record is served at wordlist/PROVENANCE.md. These terms place no restriction on what you may do with that file: it is in the public domain, and it remains so regardless of its presence here. Anything the tools compute for you is yours to use, for anything you like.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to disrupt the site, scrape it abusively, present it as your own, or use it in violation of applicable law.

Changes

The tools and these terms may change over time. Continued use after a change means acceptance of the updated terms; the date at the top of this page records the latest revision.
